What a beautiful spacious apartment, just steps away from Porta Fiorentina one of the five entrances to the ancient walled city of Volterra.. the apartment is very close to the Roman theatre that was constructed in the first century AD. Enrico, our host, was very accommodating. We told him our visit was to celebrate my cousins birthday, so he helped us order a cake and had it in the fridge waiting for us.. there are so many amazing restaurants and shops in Volterra that you actually don’t have to leave town to have a wonderful vacation.. Volterra is an hour away from Pisa’s airport, Florence and Siena.. also only 30 mins from the sea.. it was a picture perfect stay! thank you Enrico!

We had dinner there after the sightseeing in the town. We loved the place for a number of reasons, first of all the location is great. It’s situated in the street leading to Porta all’Arco, one of the prettiest in town. Then, inside the restaurant, under the floor, behind the glass, there are remains of historical sites, which makes this place even more interesting. And finally the food, the reastaurant offers vegetarian/vegan dishes made from seasonal product bought from the local farmers… So, if you like food that combines tradition with modern approach and care about where your food comes from, this restaurant should be definitely on your list!

Fantastic location and food!

We came upon Life Bistrot quite by accident. What great luck. The owner engaged us with a great story about what he is trying to do and his decision to open a vegan restaurant in Italy. It was a unique experience in how they are set up and the food was so good. The group of salads were fresh and delicious. The hummus selection was so interesting and very tasty. The life pizza with almond cream as the substitute for cheese was out of this world.

A special find in Volterra

We found this restaurant because of the app. When we arrived around 6-7 p.m. Volterra wasn‘t too crowded and we were the first guests to sit down. The terrace is a beautiful place to sit and enjoy your dinner… The restaurant is all vegan, but they don‘t brag about it. Actually, there is only one small sentence on the menu that tells that the food is all vegan. The staff and the owner are very friendly and welcoming. The owner was really excited that we showed interest in the history of the place and enjoyed the vegan dishes… you can keep track of the end price because of the table card. We even went a second time to the restaurant two days later and got a little discount. All in all we can really recommend eating there.

Delicious vegan food in nice atmosphere

Definitely recommend this place. Located in the center of Volterra, this restaurant is very well kept with a glass floor displaying some archaeological ruins. The owner, who’s vegan, was very helpful in explaining the whole process of weighing the buffet food you select. The buffet food was delicious with a variety of options like couscous, pasta, rice and beans, pizza, potato salads, soup, and a variety of hummus. You also have the option of ordering from the menu a la carte. I was so satisfied with the buffet dinner that I came back the next day for lunch…

Great vegan restaurant in the heart of Volterra!

Great plant based restaurant and very unique. We went for lunch and you could choose either the buffet (pay by weight) or from the regular menu. Pizza with cashew cheese, rice dishes, potatoes, lentils, desserts, great wine list. It is in a very interesting archeological area that was discovered when they were renovating the restaurant. Inside the restaurant you can see an Etruscan city wall, part of the ancient Etruscan Via Porta all’Arco, and a seven-meter-deep Etruscan well. Great vegan Tuscan experience

All vegan buffet in an interesting archeological site

Very well located, very friendly and helpful staff and a good choice of interesting vegan dishes. I fully agree with the positive comments made by other reviewers. It’s all vegan with a buffet and à la carte and you can combine the two. Plenty of seating outside. Plus…. there are some very interesting archeological remains under the glass floor inside the restaurant.

Great place for vegans!

Totally fab place. Great menu or buffet (by weight) which we went for. Everything on offer was so delicious, nothing left on our plates let’s say. You can go up for seconds and keep weighing your plate which gets added to your bill with ease. Service was great, staff very helpful, welcoming and spoke very good English. The setting is beautiful, located down a picturesque old street. Built on a historic site too, dating back BC, which is encased in a glass floor underfoot.

Lunch in Volterra

“Life” bistro and restaurant are a beautiful fusion of contemporary sustainable and conscious approach to eating with a breathtaking historical context of the interiors and the surrounding street with monuments dating back to Etruscan history of Volterra! The food is delicious, strictly vegan with flair and elegance of almost gourmet cusine. The interiors are an archaeological site, yet arranged with modernity and light style. The outside tables offer one of the most romantic location in Volterra overlooking the charming Via Porta all’Arco with its art galleries and artisan shops. A must for refined travelers!

A beautiful fusion of contemporary sustainability and amazing history

We were looking for a vegan place for lunch and we were incredibly greatful to have found this place. The food is the most amazing vegan food you can think of. Everything we tried was superb from the buffet to the a la carte. The cheese plate is out of this world and its made with fermented chickpeas. My hands still smell of faux cheese after a while. The owner, Enrico, is so pationate about his work and takes great care of all his customers. 10/10. We will back for dinner tomorrow.

More than amazing food

The manager, Enrico, is very passionate about this vegan restaurant. He takes his time explaining the dishes and how they are vegan representations of classic Italian preparations. We ordered two soups and two pastas. Everything was outstanding! We also had a very nice artiginal beer from San Gimignano which was a pleasant surprise. The restaurant is also an archaeological site. The floor is glass where you can see the medieval pavement, Etruscan wall, and a well.

Unique Food, Excellent Service

We have noticed just by walking in downtown and then it was not a question that we will give a try. As we prefer organic foods and are vegans its a heaven for us. Super quality, multiple choices, excellent service, its just simple perfect. Eat anything you want, you will not be disappointed.

Don’t leave Volterra without eating here

Great find! Restaurant is located in a charming alley and offers fresh delicious salads as well as a great menu. Restaurant concept is novel with a glass floor covering excavations that shows a Well, dating back three and a half thousand years ago. Very enjoyable, refreshing experience.

Great healthy, delicious food

We always enjoy visiting Volterra and have eaten in a range of restaurants there but we truly prefer this one. The buffet formula works really well as you pay according to the weight of the food you put on your plate. This already makes you think about the quantity of what you will eat. The choice of food includes a wide variety of vegetables, pasta salads, pizza, humus, bread, etc…, all of which come across as really healthy and taste delicious. The host brings across his enthusiasm which provides you with a unique dining experience in Volterra!

Fairly unique mix of healthy food with a great buffet concept
